NOHFC – People & Talent Program

Receive up to 50-90% of Employee Wages in Funding.

The NOHFC People & Talent Program is provided by the Northern Ontario Heritage Corporation (NOHFC) and is designed to attract, retain, and develop Northern Ontario’s workforce by creating and sustaining new and existing jobs.
There are two streams offered on an ongoing intake through the People & Talent Program, each having its own specific criteria and eligibility factors, as listed below.

Funding amounts vary according to each unique stream:

Indigenous Workforce Development Stream:

  • Up to 75-90% of an Indigenous intern’s salary and employer’s portion of Mandatory Employment Related Costs (MERCs) to a max of $35k per year;
  • For eligible businesses, up to 75% to a max of $52.5k per year;
  • Project funding is determined by the NOHFC Board of Directors;
  • Limited funding is available for this program; and
  • Meeting the eligibility criteria does not ensure a project will be approved.

Workforce Development Stream:

  • A Conditional contribution of up to 50% of funding for an intern’s salary;
  • Funding, when combined with other provincial and federal government sources, won’t exceed 50% of eligible costs for businesses and 90% of eligible costs for municipalities, Indigenous communities and not-for-profit organizations;
  • Project funding is determined by the NOHFC Board of Directors;
  • Limited funding is available for this program; and
  • Meeting the eligibility criteria does not ensure a project will be approved.

Eligible Applicants for each stream:

Indigenous Workforce Development Stream:

  • Businesses, municipalities, Indigenous communities, and not-for-profit organizations located in Northern Ontario;
  • Have been in operation for at least one year; and
  • Have a minimum of one full-time employee.

Workforce Development Stream:

  • Businesses, municipalities, Indigenous communities, and not-for-profit organizations located in Northern Ontario;
  • Have been in operation for at least one year; and
  • Have a minimum of one full-time employee.
Accessible Technology Program (ATP)

Eligible Activities

Funding amounts vary according to each unique stream:

Indigenous Workforce Development Stream:

  • Salaries/wages and employer’s portion of Mandatory Employment Related Costs (MERCs) for a limited internship of 52 weeks (a minimum of 35 hours per week) for candidates who:
    • Are an Indigenous person, including First Nation, Metis, or Inuit;
    • Are new to the work force, transitioning to new career paths, or are unemployed or underemployed and entering a new field;
    • Have not previously participated in a NOHFC-funded internship;
    • Are a minimum of 18 years of age; and
    • Reside in and legally entitled to work, in Canada.
  • Organizations are eligible for two internships at any given time and only costs for 52 weeks of work will be reimbursed.

Workforce Development Stream:

  • Salaries/wages and employer’s portion of Mandatory Employment Related Costs (MERCs) for a limited internship of 52 weeks (a minimum of 35 hours per week) for candidates who:
    • Are new entrants into the work force, are transitioning to a new career, or the unemployed or underemployed who are entering a new field;
    • Have not previously participated in a NOHFC-funded internship;
    • Are at least 18 years of age; and
    • Reside, and be legally entitled to work, in Canada.
