Alberta Innovates – Industry R&D Associates Program

Receive up to $74,500 in Government Funding.

Alberta Innovates’ Industry R&D Associates Program offsets a portion of costs related to hiring an associate to perform technical research and development activities. Contribution is paid as a monthly stipend plus an annual Expense Allowance of up to $7,000 to cover a portion of non-salary costs incurred by the researcher. Associates must be hired as a full-time employee.

There are two funding levels available for the Industry R&D Associates Program:

  • Level 1 – Applicants may receive up to $52,500 as up to 75% of a full-time salary. Applicants must contribute at least 25% of the associate’s salary.
  • Level 2 – Applicants may receive up to $67,500 as up to 75% of a full-time salary. Applicants must contribute at least 25% of the associate’s salary.

An additional expense allowance of $7,000 annually may be allotted to applicants for both levels.

The eligibility criteria for both applicants and associates vary:

Applicant eligibility criteria:

  • Applicants must be a for-profit SME incorporated in Alberta;
  • There must not be a conflict of interest;
  • Has fewer than 500 employees and less than $50 million in annual revenues;
  • Has two or less current Albert Innovates Associates; and
  • Has no issues financially with Alberta Innovates (i.e outstanding debts) or it’s subsidiaries.

Associate eligibility criteria:

  • Is not the owner of more than 15% of shares in the applicant’s company;
  • Has never been the associate of the applicant prior to application;
  • Has no issues financially with Alberta Innovates (i.e outstanding debts) or it’s subsidiaries; and
  • Will be living in the province of Alberta for the duration of the project.
 
Accessible Technology Program (ATP)

Eligible Activities

All projects must meet the following criteria to be eligible for funding:

  • Has identifiable with critical milestones;
  • Is completed within a one-year term; and
  • Adheres to any further requirements Alberta Innovates may implement.
