CanExport Innovation
Receive up to 75% of up to $75,000 in Export Funding.
CanExport Innovation, administered by the Trade Commissioner Service (TCS), provides funding support to Canadian SMEs, academic institutions, and non-governmental research centers for international R&D partnerships. Activities funded through this program include international market research, IP protection, attending conferences, and establishing strategic global partnerships.

Amount of Funding

Maximum Funding: Up to $75,000 per project.

Cost-Sharing: Covers up to 75% of eligible expenses; the applicant must contribute the remaining 25% (in-kind contributions are not permitted).

Funding Type: Provided as a grant, disbursed after the funding agreement is signed.
Eligible Applicants
Eligible Applicants:
-
Canadian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with fewer than 500 full-time equivalent employees.

Academic institutions.
-
Non-government research centres
Applicant Requirements:
-
Must be registered in Canada with an active Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) business number.

Must own, co-own, or have decision-making authority over the intellectual property (IP) rights for the technology.

Must have a prototype at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 4 or higher.

Must intend to commercially launch the technology within 5 years.

Must demonstrate financial capacity to cover their share of project costs and to finance subsequent R&D work resulting from the collaboration.
Eligible Activities
CanExport Innovation funds activities leading up to the formalization of an R&D partnership. Once a partnership is formalized (i.e., all agreements are signed and R&D work begins), further activities are ineligible.

Applying for intellectual property protection in international markets.

Applying for certification in international markets.

Seeking expert legal and business advice.

Shipping technology to determine feasibility or compatibility with a partner’s technology.

Translating, adapting, and creating promotional plans or materials.

Attending virtual networking functions, meetings, or conferences.

Travel-Related Activities:

Traveling abroad or within Canada to meet with pre-identified foreign partners.

Attending an event or conference to meet with pre-identified foreign partners.
