Manitoba Climate Action Fund: Grants for Sustainability and Clean Energy

Manitoba’s Department of Environment and Climate Change has introduced the Manitoba Climate Action Fund, a significant initiative aimed at supporting businesses, communities, and non-profit organizations in their efforts to combat climate change.

Funding Snapshot: Manitoba’s Climate Action Fund 

This Manitoba Climate Action Fund offers non-repayable grants to support projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance climate resilience, and promote the adoption of clean energy technologies across the province. 

Amount: 

  • Non-repayable grants of up to 60% of eligible project expenses, to a maximum of $150,000. 
  • 100% stacked funding is allowable. 

Applicant Eligibility: 

Applicants must have established operations in Manitoba for at least one year before applying, and must be at least one of the following: 

  • Businesses, including social enterprises. 
  • Incorporated non-profit organizations. 
  • Academic or educational institutions. 
  • Municipalities. 
  • Northern Affairs communities. 
  • Indigenous communities or organizations. 

Eligible Projects: 

  • Projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Manitoba; and/or 
  • Projects that support enhanced resiliency to the impacts of a changing climate; and/or 
  • Projects that increase the adoption of affordable and clean energy technologies in Manitoba. 

Timeline: 

  • Applications are closed as of January 20, 2025.
  • Projects must be completed by March 31, 2026. 

Advancing Sustainability Toward Canada’s Net-Zero Emissions Goals 

The Manitoba Climate Action Fund plays a crucial role in supporting Canada’s broader commitment to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050. By funding projects that reduce emissions, enhance climate resilience, and expand the use of clean energy technologies, the fund directly contributes to national efforts to create a low-carbon economy and combat climate change. 

Eligible projects under the program align with Canada’s net-zero objectives by focusing on initiatives such as, but not limited to: 

Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions 

  • Implementing carbon capture and storage technologies; and/or 
  • Transitioning to electric vehicle infrastructure and fleet electrification; and/or 
  • Retrofitting buildings with high-efficiency heating, cooling, and insulation systems. 

Enhancing Climate Resilience 

  • Developing community-based climate adaptation plans to mitigate extreme weather impacts; and/or 
  • Strengthening flood prevention and water conservation measures; and/or 
  • Supporting sustainable agriculture practices that improve soil health and reduce emissions. 

Expanding Clean and Affordable Energy 

  • Installing solar and wind power generation systems for businesses and communities; and/or 
  • Advancing energy storage solutions to enhance grid stability and efficiency; and/or 
  • Promoting bioenergy and hydrogen fuel alternatives as sustainable energy sources. 
     

Additional Government Funding Opportunities for Manitoba Businesses 

Beyond the Climate Action Fund, Manitoba offers various government funding programs to support business growth, innovation, and workforce development. These programs provide financial assistance to help businesses expand, enhance their operations, and implement sustainable practices. Key funding opportunities include: 

Canada-Manitoba Job Grant: 

  • Assists employers in providing training for new and existing employees. 
  • Covers up to 66% of training costs, with a maximum of $10,000 per trainee. 
  • Examples of eligible training initiatives: 
  • Technical skills training for emerging clean energy technologies. 
  • Leadership development programs for small business owners. 
  • Digital transformation training to enhance operational efficiency. 

Additional Business Funding Programs: 

Manitoba offers various sector-specific funding opportunities, such as: 

  • Ag Action Manitoba Program – Provides funding for agricultural innovation and sustainability. 
  • Manitoba Industrial Opportunities Program (MIOP) – Offers loan support to large-scale business expansion projects.
