Employee Spotlight: Dylan Henry, Manager, Government Grants
29/01/2025
With a master’s degree in history, Dylan Henry has always been passionate about context and making meaningful connections. Before entering the grants industry, Dylan worked as a Project Manager at Drivewise, where he managed professional driver training projects. That role was pivotal—it introduced him to the dynamic world of grants and set him on a new path. The variety of grants and the opportunity to make a tangible impact drew him to the sector.
“It feels like you’re really benefiting companies,” Dylan shares, noting that this sense of purpose keeps him engaged every day.
A New Chapter with Ryan: Growth, Resources, and Opportunity
The acquisition of Mentor Works by Ryan marked a transformative chapter for Dylan and his team. Transitioning from a small, close-knit company of around 30 people to joining a global firm with more than 4,000 employees brought fresh possibilities for growth and impact.
“Ryan provides greater outreach and resources,” Dylan explains. “With Ryan’s backing, we now have the training potential and network to truly deepen our expertise.”
The expanded team and robust training resources allow Dylan to continue his professional development and connect with experts across industries. With Ryan’s investment in personal growth, he’s excited about the impact they can make, both in Canada and beyond.
A Passion for Helping Clients Succeed
For Dylan, the reward of working in grants goes beyond paperwork and proposals. It’s about the people and industries he supports, particularly in sectors close to home. Working with clients on projects involving regional development brings him a sense of accomplishment, knowing he’s contributing to local growth and critical industries.
“It’s like putting a puzzle together,” Dylan reflects. “Seeing these businesses thrive because of the work we’re doing—it’s incredibly fulfilling.”
A Day in the Life: Client Services and Growth
Dylan’s typical day begins with client kickoff meetings, aligning with clients on project needs and goals. The collaborative nature of the role is something he values deeply. “Working with passionate people who are just as invested in growth as we are keeps me focused,” he says. From researching specific grant nuances to problem-solving in real time, Dylan is constantly engaged, fine-tuning each grant’s story to maximize impact.
Aside from this, Dylan also manages the Consultant team, helping each grant consultant find their unique voice and expertise within the government funding landscape. As a positive and engaging leader within our grants practice, Dylan ensures our grant consultants are fully equipped with the information they need to tell a client’s story.
Navigating Challenges with Precision
In the grants industry, each funding program has unique metrics, timelines, and requirements—a challenge Dylan tackles head-on. “You need a wide range of knowledge and the ability to connect dots across industries,” he explains. He credits his experience in history for honing his ability to understand complex backgrounds and make these connections. With each new program, Dylan works meticulously to meet grant-specific needs and adapt to evolving funding landscapes, a skill he’s found invaluable in a rapidly changing industry.
Supportive Culture and Continuous Learning
Starting out at Mentor Works, Dylan faced a steep learning curve, but thanks to the mentorship of supportive directors, he was able to get up to speed. “I struggled when I first joined, but the team and leadership gave me the time and mentorship I needed,” he shares. Now, he’s in a place where he can pass that support forward, guiding newer team members and investing in their success. Thinking about earning a Project Management Institute (PMI) certification, Dylan appreciates the development opportunities Ryan offers and looks forward to expanding his skills in the grants sector.
Excited About the Future of Grants
Looking ahead, Dylan is excited about trends like sustainability and resource efficiency, which are shaping the future of Canadian grants.
“Canada has a resource issue, and we need more specific grants to address resource extraction and EV infrastructure,” he explains.
Dylan is particularly interested in grants that align with energy efficiency, sustainable technology, and long-term infrastructure improvements. These initiatives, he believes, will contribute to Canada’s sustainable development and economic resilience.
Beyond the Office
Outside of work, Dylan enjoys reading about world politics and history—interests that deepen his perspective on the global economic landscape. Whether on the patio or playing ball hockey, he finds time to relax and recharge. Dylan also enjoys spending time with his partner, Rachel, and their two cats, Patches and Penny. The flexibility Ryan offers helps him maintain a work-life balance that fuels his energy and passion for his role.
